The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held in two phases, with participation of 175 countries. The first phase took place in Geneva hosted by the Government of Switzerland from 10 to 12 December 2003, and the second phase took place in Tunis hosted by the Government of Tunisia, from 16 to 18 November 2005


Pan-European Forum on "Human Rights in the Information Society: Responsible Behaviour by Key Actors", 12-13 September 2005
Building an inclusive Information Society, based on respect for human rights, requires new forms of solidarity, partnership and cooperation among governments, civil society, the private sector and international organisations. Through open discussions and exchanges of information worldwide, a multi-stakeholder governance approach will help shape agendas and devise new regulatory and non-regulatory models which will account for challenges and problems arising from the rapid development of the Information Society.


Information and Communication Technologies, a World Bank Group Strategy
The World Bank Group is developing a framework for supporting the knowledge economy of its client countries based around a dynamic network infrastruc-ture, an economic and institutional framework conducive to the creation and flow of knowledge, an educated and skilled population, and a network of knowledge communities.


Global Information & Communication Technologies (GICT)
The World Bank Group's Global Information & Communication Technologies Department (GICT) plays an important role in developing and promoting access to information and communications technologies (ICT) in developing countries. Created in January 2000, GICT brings together the private investment practice of IFC and the public sector advisory and funding arms of the World Bank, to provide governments, private companies and community organizations with the capital and expertise needed to develop and exploit ICT to reduce poverty and foster development.
