Prizes Awarded to Winners of Bulgaria Development Gateway’s Essay Writing Contest
On July 24, 2003 ARC Fund hosted an award giving ceremony which marked the concluding phase of an essay writing contest titled “A Million for Development”. The contest was jointly organized by the Bulgaria Development Gateway, to which ARC Fund acts as secretariat, and the World Bank - Sofia mission. Its objective was to provoke Bulgaria’s young people to express their views about the development priorities of the country, and explore the opportunities for knowledge sharing provided by the Bulgaria Gateway portal. The contest was open to anyone with original ideas and an interest in the country’s development. Participants were expected to suggest ways of investing a million (dollars, or Euro) with the greatest impact for Bulgaria’s development.

A total of 61 essays were submitted in the period May 27 - June 25, 2003. Nineteen of them were shortlisted by a jury comprised of representatives of the government, mass media, NGO community, and the World Bank. The finalists were then invited to a live debate where they presented their ideas and strategies. This discussion was followed by the award ceremony which brought together more than 100 people from government and academic circles, businesses and NGOs. Prizes were presented to the contest winners by Mr. Oscar de Bruyn Kops, World Bank country manager for Bulgaria and Mr. Sophia Kassidova, deputy minister of transport and high technologies.

A special feature on this contest is available in PDF format here.
