| Bulgaria Development Gateway Launches New, Redesigned Portal Site |

A new version of the Bulgaria Development Gateway portal site was officially launched at a media conference held today (April 10, 2003) at ARC Fund. Bulgaria DG is a country-level component of the global Development Gateway initiative which was launched by the World Bank and Development Gateway Foundation in 2001 with the goal of increasing global access to knowledge and using the power of information and communication technologies to support poverty reduction and sustainable development.
The mission of Bulgaria DG is to facilitate the country’s transition into an information, or knowledge-based society by consolidating the national dialogue on ICT for development and promoting a common vision among the relevant stakeholders in government, business, civil society, academic and research communities, and international donor organizations.
Bulgaria DG implements a broad range of activities, among which (i) building a knowledge sharing portal which serves as a one-stop-shop repository for development stakeholders in the country; (ii) providing policy support and advocacy to shape conducive ICT policies in the country; (iii) raising public awareness and educating target groups on the importance and benefits of ICTs for development; and (iv) testing and implementing small-scale pilot projects which can demonstrate the practical impact of ICTs on different aspects of development, such as increasing transparency and accountability of government, supporting SMEs and e-commerce development, empowering civil society and grass-roots organizations, or developing e-learning applications, among others. BgDG is also strongly focused on enhancing regional cooperation and transfer of good practices among the countries in Southeast Europe.
ARC Fund serves as secretariat to this initiative which is being implemented under the larger umbrella of the Bulgarian Internet Alliance for Economic Development.
