International conference: Foreign Direct Investments in Balkan Countries

On October 22-23, 2001 an international conference "Foreign Direct Investments in Balkan Countries: Alternatives for the Future" was held in Tirana, Albania. The event was attended by representatives of the institutions involved in this project supported by Freedom House - the Applied Research and Communications Fund, Bulgaria
(ARC Fund), the Center for Strategic Research and Documentation,
Macedonia (CSRD) and the Institute for Development Research and
Alternatives, Albania (IDRA) together with other NGOs, government
institutions, international donor organizations as the USAID and the Organization or Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and diplomats. The conference was
organized by the IDRA with the support of the East-East Program of
the Open Society Institute, Budapest.
The ARC Fund was represented by Vesselin Mintchev, Tihomir Bezlov
and Todor Yalamov. Mr. Dragomir Dzhambazki, Counselor at the
Bulgarian Embassy to Albania also attended the Conference. Mr.
Mintchev introduced the current trends in foreign direct investment
in Bulgaria and the main results from different recent surveys on
FDI conducted by ARC Fund and the Center for Study of Democracy.
Mr. Bezlov presented a paper on FDI, competitiveness and gray
market. Mr. Yalamov outlined the major financial, legal and
institutional issues concerning FDI in Bulgaria and a set of
recommendations for promoting foreign direct investments in the
region.
Being the final event of a series of national FDI workshops in
Sofia, Skopie and Tirana held throughout the year, the Conference
was aimed at enabling discussions on topics regarding the recent
developments, currents trends and prospective challenges for
foreign direct investment in Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and
Kosova and it facilitated participants to address problems through
a common regional approach. |
