Council of Europe's Seminar on Data Protection

A Seminar on the protection of individuals with regard to the personal data processing was held on September 25 and 26, 2000 at the Information Centre on the Council of Europe in Sofia and the Center for the Study of Democracy.

The Seminar was organized jointly by the Council of Europe and the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria in the framework of Council of Europe's Program on assistance for the development and consolidation of democratic stability on the occasion of the drafting of a new law on data protection.

This law is intended to regulate the collection and processing of information related to individuals by public and private entities, individuals or companies.

It is aimed to protect all individuals with regard to the risks related to the increasing computerization of activities in society and constant technological progress while at the same time enabling Bulgaria to face the new challenges of the Information Society in a modern and competitive economy.

Ms. Eliana Masseva, Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, opened the Seminar.

The Council of Europe delegation welcomed the invitation of the adoption of the law and the due attention paid to the European standards such as Convention 108 (Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data) of the Council of Europe. They considered the draft at the light of the European standards in data protection.
