Information day for promoting the ombudsman institution in the city of Batak
 
The information day for promoting the ombudsman institution, held on December 17, 2003 in the city of Batak was aimed at speeding up the public debate on establishing the ombudsman institution on local level.

The event was organized jointly by CSD, the Municipality of Batak, Batak Municipal Council and the Bulgarian Association for Civil Rights and Fair Elections – Razgrad.

Mayors and municipal councilors from several municipalities of Pazardzhik District, representatives of the municipal administration of Batak and Pazardzhik District Governor’s Office, of NGOs and mass media took part in the seminar.

The Sofia Municipality Public Mediator Ms. Antoaneta Tzoneva presented the legal framework of the ombudsman institution in Bulgaria on both national and local level and the activities of the Office of Sofia Municipality Public Mediator.

Mr. Georgi Milkov from the Non-Governmental Organizations Center – Razgrad acquainted the participants at the seminar with the experience and successful practices, accumulated in the process of establishing the institution of the local public mediator (ombudsman) on experimental level in several municipalities in Razgrad District.

In the course of the discussion that followed a variety of issues were raised as regards the significance of the ombudsman institution in the relations between citizens and local administration and the positive role it could play for diminishing the number of corruption cases and bad administrative practices as well as different practical aspects of the organization and activity of the ombudsman type institutions.
