Seminar: Standards of public life including means to avoid Corruption

Dr. Maria Yordanova, Head of Law Program, Center for the Study of Democracy, lectured on Coalition 2000's experience during a seminar on Standards of public life including means to avoid Corruption, held in Trieste from 25 to 29 November, 2002.
The seminar was organized under a programme named "UNIDEM Campus Trieste", recently set up by the European Commission for Democracy through Law, also known as the Venice Commission, a consultative body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in constitutional law.
The program for legal training for the civil servants is intended to provide legal training in primarily, efficient administration and good governance and to discuss subjects such as democratisation and human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to national minorities, law enforcement and institution building. The programme consists of organisation of seminars based on a participative method. Each seminar includes: a) Lectures introducing the subject, followed by the possibility for participants to ask questions; b) Discussion of practical examples proposed by the lecturer; this exercise will help in finding common European values that can be applied in all member States. c) Exchange of experience: discussion of practical situations that participants have come across. This exercise aims to help to identify areas where legislation and/or practice should be improved in order to fully satisfy common European standards, and to find ways of adapting such legislation and/or practice to these standards.
