| Third Round Table: Corruption in the Higher Education System in Bulgaria – Myth or Reality?

 The third and final round table on the project National Students Initiative "I Do Not Bribe!" took place on 26 October, 2004 at the Center for Study of Democracy. The project is implemented by the National Youth Organization for Social and Economic Development, Stara Zagora within the framework of the Civil Society Against Corruption Program of Coalition 2000.
 The main presenters at the discussion were: the deputy-rector of New Bulgarian University, prof. Ljudmil Georgiev; Mrs. Albena Kuiumdjieva, cheif expert at the Committee for Coordination of the Work of the Combat of Corruption at the Council of Ministers; Mr. Ivan Ivanov, MP, Union of Democratic Forces; Ms. Teodora Varbanova from the National Youth Organization for Social and Economic Development. Other participants included: representatives from the National Institute on Education, media, MPs, nongovernmental organizations, academics.
 The topics of discussion during the round table were: results and analyses of the web-based opinion surveys evaluating the transparency of management of higher education institutions and the pre-conditions for corrupt practices in three universities in Bulgaria: Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski”, Technical University in Gabrovo and New Bulgarian University in Sofia. The focus of the discussions during the third round table on the project though were the survey results obtained at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia.
 The project aimed at stimulating the dialogue between university administration, professors and student organizations on adopting measures to restrict the opportunities for corruption practices in the Bulgarian higher education. One of the first steps in this directions was the creation of the first virtual portal site which publishes up-to-date information on events, analyses and opinions on the problems of the higher education and corruption in Bulgarian Universities.
The previous two round tables on the project took place on 18 May, 2004 at the Gabrovo Technical University and on 20 May, 2004 at Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski.
