On May 25-31, 2003, the Korean Government hosted the 11th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) and Global Forum III on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity , together as the 2003 Seoul Conference.
The 11th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) was held during the first four days of the 2003 Seoul Anti-Corruption Conference, in May 25-28 2003.
Global Forum III on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity immediately followed, convening in May 29-31 2003. Both conferences were held at the COEX Convention Center in Seoul, Korea.
As efforts to combat corruption increase, so does the need for information exchange and cooperation among the growing number of organisations and institutions involved in anti-corruption work. The Seoul Conference marked the first time in which the Global Forum, an intergovernmental conference held on the ministerial-level, and the IACC, an anti-corruption conference in which the participants attend in their personal capacities, are jointly held, united by the common objective of promoting the exchange of knowledge and experiences in curbing corruption.
Since 1983, the biennial International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) has brought together anti-corruption professionals to exchange information and ideas about the fight against corruption, assess existing strategies and develop new approaches. The IACC is now the premier global forum for the networking and cross-fertilisation that is indispensable to effective global and national advocacy and action. The conferences have come to attract politicians, national and local government officials, representatives of the world of business and the professions, members of the judiciary, law enforcement officials, researchers, international development organizations, the media, academics, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In short, all those who through their work come or could come into contact with the many forms of corruption and who are concerned with the prevention or prosecution of corrupt practices.
The Global Forum is a gathering of government officials from around the world to share experiences, refine understanding about effective practices, and search for new and better ways to defeat corruption. Global Forum III took cues from the first two Forums, but also drew out practical solutions to combat the problems that have been identified with corruption, therefore giving life to the theme Ongoing Challenges, Shared Responsibilities.
