Presentation of a report: Civil Society in Bulgaria: Trends and Risks
On 30 September 2010 from 16:00 h. the Center for the Study of Democracy presented its report Civil Society in Bulgaria: Trends and Risks at its conference hall. The report aims at outlining the major trends and risks of civil society development in Bulgaria. It recommends legislative changes related to the activities of NGOs as well as measures for self-regulation and internal control within the sector.
The report investigates the factors which have allowed politicians, and administrators to misuse NGOs as a cover for gaining illegitimate profits. The publication summarizes quantitative data and expert opinion, analyzes specific corruption case studies that illustrate civil society capture in Bulgaria, and highlights other risks associated with the lack of transparency and accountability within the sector.
The report builds upon the experience of the Center for the Study of Democracy - one of the first NGOs registered in the country and an active participant in the debate on the development and improvement of the legal framework of Bulgaria's civic sector.
