| Workshop: The Impact of the Crisis on the New Member States - Non-Eurozone New Member States

On 09 December 2010, Mr. Ruslan Stefanov, Director of CSD’s Economic Program, participated in a workshop, organized by the Group of the European People's Party in the European Parliament.
 Mr. Othmar Karas, Coordinator of the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis committee (CRIS) and Ms Iliana Ivanova, CRIS Vice-Chair moderated the workshop. Mr. Mart Laar, Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister of Estonia and Mr. Simeon Djankov, Minister of Finance of Bulgaria were keynote speakers at the event. Members of European Parliament and NGO representatives discussed the impact of the crisis on the new Member States and the possible exit strategies. The discussion also focused on the policy coordination between the Eurozone Member States and the new Member States, as well as the enlargement of the Euro-area.
 Mr. Ruslan Stefanov, Director of the Economic Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy highlighted the top competitiveness deficiencies that could hinder Bulgaria on its way to the effective adoption of the euro. Mr. Stefanov noted that new member states are rarely on the radar screen of European institutions. The latter fail to acknowledge existing differences between member states. It is important to watch the wider competitiveness of European economies than just focusing on the narrow criteria for Eurozone entry. The European Commission should also consider the wide differences between member states in terms of good governance as portrayed by the different performance on indicators measuring corruption, organized crime and the hidden economy.
