New Initiative for Counteracting Corruption at the Customs Offices
The Bribe is Harmful to Everyone warned stickers distributed in all customs desks, bureaus and cross-border check-points at the beginning of August 2004. The warning sticker is a caricature painted by the artist Ivaylo Ninov upon a request of the Customs Agency. The signs are in Bulgarian, English and French.
In addition, the customs distributed information brochures in English and Bulgarian, which give the most essential information to passengers for easy passing the customs’ control. The brochure gives information on: what goods could be exported across the border without tax or VAT; what good could be imported without tax; what sums of money could be freely exported or imported across the border; on what conditions taxes and VAT for imports of vehicles are not paid; is it possible to send foreign currency or items made out of precious metals via mail; what goods and services should be declared in a written form, etc. Another brochure contains useful information with directions to importing firms.
The information materials are printed in cooperation with Crown Angels Agency as part of the governmental program for counteracting corruption.
