Distance Learning Center Launched
 
The official ceremony for launching a Distance Learning Center – part of the World Bank’s Global Development Learning Network- was held on 22 March 2004 in the Center for the Study of Democracy. Mr. Shigeo Katsu, Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Region, The World Bank, Mr. Anand Seth, Country Director in the World Bank Regional Office for SCE and Ms. Monika Weber-Fahr, Manager, GDLN Services, as well as other GDLN and World Bank Institute representatives participated through a video-connection. Ms. Lydia Shouleva, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, representatives from the Bulgarian Government, foreign business, academic circles, international donors and NGOs also took part in the ceremony.

With the opening of this center Bulgaria is joining the global family of GDLN – a network, which unites over 60 countries all over the world. The network is established by the World Bank and its objective is to support the stable development and the overcoming of the poverty problems in the countries by creating possibilities for training, exchange of knowledge and dialogue between specialists, engaged in development issues.

The Bulgarian center will offer wide range of possibilities for distance learning on topics, concerning development by combining the advantages of the new interactive technologies (videoconferences and Internet) with the traditional forms of seminars and discussions. The Center will be open for representatives of the state administration, the business, universities, and NGOs, which would be able to use its services and technology to access the world knowledge and to communicate with their partners and experts all over the world.
