The US Presidential Campaign and Fundraising Techniques

Mr. Paul Pelletier, one of America's leading experts in the field of political fundraising gave a lecture at the Center for the Study of Democracy on July 26, 2004.

He spoke of the US political technology stressing that nowadays the success is measured by the ability to organize and communicate. Communication becomes very important and politicians put more efforts in grass-roots methods making the campaigns less technical but more people oriented, he said. The importance of the media and the TV ads diminishes. He described four types of campaigns depending on the personality and theories of the candidate – “incumbent”, “challenger”, “open seat” and “obstructionist”.

Mr. Pelletier also explained the US division of powers and the voting procedure for electing the President, the Supreme Court and the Congress. He dwelled on the distribution of votes among the US states and suggested a number of “key battleground states” in the 2004 elections.

Finally, he presented a number of fundraising techniques and answered questions from the public about the forthcoming elections.
