| Round table with John Mroz: The Future of Security in Europe: The Role of EU and NATO Enlargement

 On November 4, 2003 the CSD hosted a round table discussion on the future of security in Europe with the participation of Mr. John Mroz, President and Founder of the EastWest Institute. The discussion benefited from the participation of experts from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Policy, Defense and Security, diplomats and journalists. CSD Chairman Dr. Ognian Shentov introduced the guest and Mr. Boyko Todorov, CSD Program Director moderated the discussion.
In his remarks John Mroz pointed to the threat perception as the first and major factor in defining foreign policy in today’s world of “enormous uncertainty”. He stressed on the gradual convergence of soft and hard security issues and said that governments should consider new matters of international concern like the environment and new important international actors such as the multinational companies.  Mr. Mroz disagreed with the opinion that the US preferred war as a means to solve conflicts and gave as an example Sudan where the US government has implemented an aid program which could become a successful alternative model in potential future local conflicts. Latest development of the ESDF, future cooperation between EU and NATO and the foreign policy of Bulgaria as a country candidate for a membership in both alliances were among other issues discussed.

John Edwin Mroz is President and Founder of the EastWest Institute, an independent international think and action organization established in 1981. He has served as an advisor to more than twenty governments including the U.S., Germany, Poland and Russia as well as the European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe and the G-8. He has received numerous international awards including Germany's highest award to a non-citizen for his role in helping facilitate German reunification.
A graduate of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and the University of Notre Dame, Mroz is the author of a landmark book on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Beyond Security: Private Perceptions Among Arabs and Israelis. He writes regularly on European, Russian and Eurasian affairs and also has contributed to journals and books on management, including the Drucker Foundation’s Organization of the Future. His work has been described in numerous volumes including, Leaders Who Make a Difference, and he will be featured as one of 40 persons profiled in a new book to be published in the fall of 2003, Soul Purpose: 40 People Who Are Changing the World for the Better (Melcher Media).
