Combating Organised Crime in the 21st Century
 
The Center for the Study of Democracy, jointly with the British Embassy and the Ministry of the Interior of Bulgaria held a discussion on the new strategies to combat organised crime on March 2, 2005 at the Boyana Conference Center. The discussion benefited from the participation of Ms. Caroline Flint, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Drugs Co-ordination, Organised Crime and European issues at the UK Home Office and Mr. William Hughes, Director General of the newly established Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). They set out the latest UK developments and thinking on issues relating to organised crime. Mr. Boyko Kotzev, Deputy Minister of Interior and Gen.-Lieut. Boyko Borissov, Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, presented the Bulgarian experience and the new challenges in combating the organised crime. Among the guests were Prof. Georgi Petkanov, Minister of Interior, UK Ambassador Jeremy Hill, MPs from the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order, state experts, diplomats, lecturers and cadets from the Academy of the Ministry of Interior, magistrates, security experts and the media.
