Press conference: Enhancing Border Security between Bulgaria, Turkey and Macedonia: Reinforcing Criminal Justice in Border Districts
 
On May 9, 2006 at a press conference in Haskovo District Court the Enhancing Border Security between Bulgaria, Turkey and Macedonia: Reinforcing Criminal Justice in Border Districts project was launched. The event was attended by judges and prosecutors from Haskovo and Svilengrad courts and prosecution offices, representatives of Haskovo District Investigation Service, the police, the customs, etc. The project is implemented by the Center for the Study of Democracy with the financial support of the British Embassy.

Dr. Kim Howells, Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK, the British Ambassador Mr. Jeremy Hill, Mr. Dimitar Bongalov, Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Justice, the Prosecutor from the Supreme Prosecution Office of Cassation Mr. Vasil Mikov, Mr. Borislav Belazelkov, Executive Secretary of the Bulgarian Judges Association and Dr. Maria Yordanova, Director of the CSD Law Program participated in the press conference. Dr. Howells underlined the importance of the project as regards Bulgaria’s future EU membership, stressing that crime, especially the organized crime, has become transnational and could be counteracted successfully only by the joint efforts of all countries concerned.

A working meeting between the CSD project team and representatives from the regional courts and prosecution offices was held after the press conference. The problems encountered by the latter and the future cooperation with the CSD in relation to the project implementation were discussed at the meeting.

Bio of Dr. Kim Howells
Dr Kim Howells was appointed Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in May 2005. He was previously Minister of State at the Department for Education and Skills. He has also held Ministerial posts at the Department for Transport, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and the Department for Trade and Industry. He is MP for Pontypridd and was educated at Mountain Ash Grammar School; Hornsey College of Art; Cambridge College of Art & Technology and Warwick University.
