UK Ambassador Jeremy Hill departs from Sofia

On September 13, 2007, on the occasion of his leaving the country, CSD and friends held a going away party for the Ambassador of the United Kingdom Jeremy Hill. Ambassador Hill has been actively involved in supporting CSD initiatives and reforms in Bulgaria. His role of promoting UK-Bulgarian relations and the process of Bulgaria’s integration with the EU has been widely acknowledged and respected among policy makers, NGOs and diplomats in Sofia.

In his remarks, Boyko Todorov, CSD Program Director highlighted Ambasaddor Hill’s vision to reach out and engage Bulgaria’s civil society. Mr. Todorov also talked about the contribution of the Ambassador to the advancement of reforms in the field of justice and home affairs but also of supporting the development of Bulgaria’s young people.

In response, Ambassador Hill thanked for the appreciation and pointed out that it had been important to strike a balance between support for tough but necessary reforms and an understanding of the difficulties that emerge in the process. He also acknowledged the good professional and personal cooperation he has had with representatives of Bulgarian NGOs.

In addition to CSD staff, the event was attended by representatives of the customs authorities, ministries of defense and finance, members of parliament, and others.

CSD’s going away present was a painting by Bulgarian painter Stefan George-Georgiev.
