Round Table on Human Trafficking in Bulgaria

On November 27, 2007, the Bulgarian Safer Internet Hotline (web112.net) together with the Center for the Study of Democracy and the State Agency for Youth and Sports co-organized a round table on the current situation with children trafficking in Bulgaria and possible measures for prevention.

The Sofia Regional Coordinator of the UN Office for Drugs and Crime, Ms. Carla Ciavarella, participated as special guest at the round table. Representatives from several public institutions and non-governmental organizations with field experience took part in the discussion, among them the National Commission for Fighting Trafficking in Human Beings; the Agency for Social Assistance; the State Agency for Child Protection; the International Organisation for Migration; the State Agency for Youth and Sports; the Center Nadja Foundation; the Animus Association; the Gender Education, Research and Technologies Foundation; the Center for the Study of Democracy and ARC Fund – in its capacity of operator of the Bulgarian Safer Internet Hotline.

Participants exchanged views on the current situation in the country. They pointed to the lack of coordinating mechanism for fighting trafficking in young women, unlike the trafficking in children where the legal basis and coordination already exist and are developing.
It was decided to form a working group that should design an action plan for prevention of trafficking, better coordination among public bodies, and among public institutions and the NGO sector.
