| Award ceremony for best journalistic materials on cases of corruption

  On March 4, 2004 Coalition 2000 announced the 2004 awards for best journalistic materials covering cases of corruption published or broadcast in Bulgarian media during 2003. The ceremony took place at the American Center in Sofia, where Ambassador James W. Pardew presented the awards to the winners.
Coalition 2000 initiated this awards competition for best materials against corruption to stimulate the active anticorruption position of the Bulgarian journalists and the media as a whole. Journalists from all over the country were invited to send copies of articles or tapes and transcripts of broadcasts treating the issue of corruption, which had been published throughout 2003.
 Eleven investigative journalists from eight media outlets competed for the second annual awards for anticorruption reporting announced by Coalition 2000. The contest was announced in October 2003 and candidates were nominated on January 10, 2004.
A five-member board headed by the former member of the Council on Electronic Media, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov, selected the winners by evaluating which of the published or broadcast in 2003 articles have most influenced public opinion and have resulted in concrete measures for countering corruption. The jury also included the CEO of the Center for Media Development Mr. Ognian Zlatev, the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Media Coalition Mr. Dimitar Sotirov, the Manager of Civil Society and Media Program to the Open Government Initiative Project Ms. Irina Faion and Dr. Emil Tsenkov from Coalition 2000.
  The First Prize went to Ms. Christina Krasteva and Mr. Stanimir Vaglenov from 24 Chassa daily for their investigation, published in November 2003 on the deal with 11 municipal properties in Sofia causing a news-breaking political scandal. The second prize was awarded to Mr. Jovo Nikolov from “Kapital” weekly for an investigation on the illegal business of the assassinated Kossio Dimitrov-Samokovetsa and his political protectors, and on the still acting trafficking channels in the country. Third prize received Mr. Krasimir Dobrev from Sega daily for the article: Why Minister Tserovski is allowed to have a private company and his subordinate X – is not allowed?.
