Civil Society in Support of Vulnerable Groups
Victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, persons in need of international protection and those deprived of liberty are among the vulnerable groups in need of the support of the civic sector in their relationships with institutions. Their problems were at the forefront of the discussion at the working meeting ‘Civil Society in Support of Vulnerable Groups’, organized on 25 February 2016 by the Center for the Study of Democracy. The main aim of the meeting was finalizing the concept on more effective participation of NGOs in the system of support of vulnerable groups, developed by CSD experts. Representatives of NGOs, involved in supporting the four vulnerable groups, took part in the event. more »
 
31st Annual Norris and Margery Bendetson EPIIC International Symposium
At the invitation of the Institute for Global Leadership, Dr. Maria Yordanova – the Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy’s Law program – participated in the 31st Annual Norris and Margery Bendetson EPIIC International Symposium on “Europe in Turmoil” which was held at Tufts University from February 18-21, 2016. more »

International Conference: Re-socialization of Offenders in the European Union: Enhancing the Role of Civil Society
On 19 January 2015 the Center for the Study of Democracy held an international conference on Re-socialization of Offenders in the European Union: Enhancing the Role of Civil Society with the participation of experts from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Lithuania, Italy, legal professionals and representatives of state institutions and civil society in Bulgaria. more »
 
A new initiative in support of vulnerable groups
The Center for the Study of Democracy started the initiative Civic organizations: a Guarantee for Equal Rights of Vulnerable Groups before the State. It will be implemented in 2014-2016 and aims at creating good conditions for the work of organizations, helping vulnerable groups in their relations with institutions, in view of reducing discrimination, inequalities, poverty and social exclusion of those communities. more »
 
A New Initiative to Support Victims of Crime
In February 2013, the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD), in a consortium of universities and organizations from 4 EU Member States, led by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, started an initiative, entitled Improving Protection of Victim’s Rights: Access to Legal Aid, supported by the European Commission. more »
 
RED Portal Launch in Bulgaria
On 22 March 2012 the Center for the Study of Democracy announced the public launch of the Rights Equality & Diversity (RED) Portal. Representatives of state institutions, involved in countering racism and discrimination in Bulgaria, as well as researchers and experts from non-governmental organisations took part in the event. more »
 
Public Conference: Prison’s minorities in the Western Balkans
On July 9, 2011, representatives of the Center for the Study of Democracy took part in the public conference on Prison’s minorities in the Western Balkans in Tirana. The Albanian Institute for International Studies hosted the event, organised under the framework of the Network to empower volunteering work within the prison system in Europe and Western Balkans (PRISNET). more »
 
Public discussion: Judicial Reform and the Execution of Penalties in the Republic of Bulgaria
On April 5, 2011, the Center for the Study of the Democracy organized a public discussion on ”Judicial reform and the execution of penalties in the Republic of Bulgaria” featuring a presentation of the Center’s report, entitled ”Penitentiary Policy and System in the Republic of Bulgaria”, published in Bulgarian and English. more »
 
EU Fundamental Rights Agency presents report on child trafficking in the EU: EU must do more to fight child trafficking
On 7 July 2009, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) released a new report on 'The role of the European Union in the fight against child trafficking'.
Many children fall victim to trafficking every year. There are extremely low numbers of convictions in child trafficking cases. Overall, the report finds that the EU must do more to address the issue. The FRA calls for better legislation to combat child trafficking. The protection and care for victims, in particular, must be improved. more »
