 Round table: Governance Mechanisms, Integrity and Transparency: Countering Corruption in Private Sector
The public debate usually focuses on corruption as a problem of the interface between the public and the private sector. However, the Corruption Monitoring System surveys of Vitosha Research for Coalition 2000 show that most of the companies deem corruption among private entities as much a problem as corruption in the public sector. Taking account of this data on March 30, 2004 the Center for the Study of Democracy and Coalition 2000 organized a round table for defining the problem and setting up the guidelines for future debate and action. more »
Meeting with the Banite Municipality Local Public Mediator
On March 29, 2004 the Center for the Study of Democracy hosted a meeting with one of the first local public mediators in Bulgaria, elected after the adoption of the new article 21a of the Law on the Local Self-Government and Local Administration (in force as of October 27, 2003), namely Ms. Zorka Karipova, elected as a public mediator for the municipality of Banite, Smolyan district. more »

Distance Learning Center Launched
On March 22, 2004 CSD hosted a ceremony to launch a Distance Learning Center - part of World Bank's Global Development Learning Network, which unites more than 60 countries all over the world. The network aims to support the stable development in the countries by creating possibilities for training, exchange of knowledge and dialogue between experts in development issues. more »
Conference on counteracting corruption in the judicial and executive branches
Effective mechanisms for counteracting corruption in the judicial and executive branches was the topic of a conference, held on March 19, 2004 at Sheraton Hotel Balkan in Sofia. The event was jointly organized by the Anticorruption Commissions at the Council of Ministers and the Commission for Prevention and Countering of Corruption at the Supreme Judicial Council. more »

Second Local Ombudsman Round Table: The Institution Local Public Mediator: Mechanism for Human Rights Protection and Curbing Corruption
On March 12, 2004 the Second Local Ombudsman Round Table was held in Sofia. It was organized jointly by Coalition 2000 and the Center for the Study of Democracy and focused on the experience and the best practices of the local public mediators as a mechanism to protect human rights and to combat corruption.

First meeting of the Task Force on elaboration of the legal framework for issuance and acceptance of electronic documents, signed with universal electronic signatures, within the judiciary
The first Task Force meeting took place on March 10, 2004. Relying on the considerable experience and active contribution of the Center for the Study of Democracy to the elaboration of the Law on Electronic Document and Electronic Signature, Dr. Maria Yordanova, Director of CSD Law Program was invited to join the Task Force.

On March 4, 2004 Coalition 2000 announced the 2004 awards for best journalistic materials covering cases of corruption published or broadcast in Bulgarian media during 2003. The ceremony took place at the American Center in Sofia. more »
