 European Union needs common action to make equality a reality for the Roma
“We have put in place strong legislation to root out discrimination in the EU, but the promise of equal opportunity remains unfulfilled for many Roma and Travellers in our societies”, said Anastasia Crickley, Chairperson of FRA’s Management Board, in a statement ahead of International Roma Day (8 April).

Road to equality begins at local level
Largely unnoticed, cities across Europe have been developing innovative practices and initiatives to deliver equality and combat racism and discrimination. While public attention all too often focuses on inter-community tensions, violent radicalisation or impoverished urban ghettos, local authorities are finding ways to promote more cohesive communities through strategies that address the needs of all city residents, irrespective of their ethnic or religious backgrounds. Such experiences and lessons learned have now been collated for a report, published by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and presented at the European Union Committee of the Regions in Brussels on 3 March 2008. more »
International workshop: Policing Minorities
On September 28-29, 2006, the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) in cooperation with the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) held an international workshop on policing minorities. The event was aimed to broaden the opportunities for Bulgarian NGOs to work with government and law-enforcement institutions in addressing issues of ethnic and racial discrimination and violence and to increase the capacity of Bulgarian law-enforcement institutions to prevent and analyze issues related to ethnic and racist violence and discrimination. more »
Frattini: EUMC plays a key role in the EU’s fight against racism
On 22 June 2006 European Commission Vice-President Franco Frattini, Commissioner for Freedom, Security and Justice today the EU’s Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia in Vienna, underlining its important role in the EU’s fight against racism and thanking the staff for their work over the last eight years. Vice-President Frattini also participated in the EU seminar on combating racism and xenophobia, held under the auspices of the Austrian Presidency of the EU and co-organised by the Commission and the EUMC. more »
FIFA Days Against Racism give strong and positive political leadership
On 28 June 2006 FIFA launched a series of high profile anti-racism activities at each quarter-final of the World Cup. The initiatives include declarations by team captains to combat racism and a call on broader society to support this aim. The EUMC very much welcomes these statements of intent and joins the call to broader society to engage actively with football authorities and anti-racism organisations in their society to turn these words into effective action. The EUMC together with the German Government, the United Nations, the European Parliament, and the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network had previously called for strong and visible action during the tournament as a kick off to much wider and sustainable action, and asked for a special day on racism. more »
