On 18 April, 2005 the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria and its Democracy Commission announced a new small grants competition. The project proposals should focus on issues like: building democratic institutions, promoting the rule of law, anti-corruption, and administration of justice, encouraging the free flow of information, supporting the development of civic education and civil society, protecting human rights, and furthering ethnic and political harmony in Bulgaria. In 2004 the Democracy Commision awarded grants to 26 Bulgarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Some of the most important moments in the 2005 project round are:
• The overall budget of the projects should not exceed ,000;
• Grants will be awarded only to non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
• The Democracy Commission staff will have weekly consultations in Sofia and in the country to discuss project concepts with potential applicants and distribute official application forms;
• All applications must be received by the U.S. Embassy no later than 27 May, 2005.
