| Introductory meeting for the launch of Sofia Economic Council
|

The Mayor of Sofia and the Center for the Study of Democracy initiated the establishment of an Economic Council of Sofia. An introductory meeting took place on January 28, 2004 at the Sofia Municipality.
The Economic Council shall combine the efforts and personal commitment of business, academic and NGO leaders of Sofia with the purpose to make the city a part of the global network of modern, dynamic and attractive centers for entrepreneurship, business, work and education. Every year the Council will present a Sofia Competitiveness White Paper to the Mayor and the Municipal Council. The Paper shall compare internationally Sofia’s economy, business environment, human capital and innovation potential.
 Representatives of the biggest foreign investors in Sofia such as Lindner Group, METRO, Shell and Cisco Systems expressed their support for the establishment of the Council. The resident representative of the United Nations Development Program in Bulgaria also backed the initiative. Representatives of the academia described the Council as the first consistent effort to bring all stakeholders together for the benefit of Sofia’s development.
