On March 9, 2004 the World Bank office in Bulgaria and the Center for the Study of Democracy organized the fourth videoconference of the GDLN Dialogue Series on Governance for Young Leaders in Eastern European Countries. It was dedicated to Citizen Access, Transparency and the Role of the Media in Sustaining Governance Reforms.
The keynote speaker Mr. Mark Nelson, Program Manager for Europe at the World Bank Institute’s Paris office, presented a video clip and empirical data, which demonstrated the Polish experience in this field.
He underlined that the processes of transition and privatization require an easier access to information and that good media coverage of the economic development has a strong impact on the increase of foreign investments. However, the effectiveness of the investigative materials depends on the management quality and capacity of the institutions to take actions and to protect free journalism. According to his experience, the investigative journalists’ stories are rarely followed up by the authorities in the developing countries. Therefore, he concluded, it is important for journalists in these countries to write persistently on a certain problem or topic in order for their work to have the desired effect.
