Initial Attitudes Towards Mass Privatization, December 1995
Vitosha Research conducted a social survey to register the attitude of the Bulgarian populace towards mass privatization on the eve of its actual start. The data was collected in November 1995. The survey method was the standardized face-to-face interview. The sample size is 2652 and is representative for the population of Bulgaria aged 18 to 60. The sample is representative separately for the population of Sofia (N = 727), Plovdiv (N = 920) and Varna (N = 967) in the above mentioned age interval. This design of the first quantitative survey was preferred to the national representative sample, because according to preliminary data, information residents in small towns and villages had about the forthcoming mass privatization was extremely low. more » |

Striving to achieve the CSD's mission of "building bridges" was particularly challenging during 1995. So challenging in fact, it defied all of our expectations. The reasons for this are many and complex - from the economic hardships and political controversies, to pressures placed on the non-profit sector, and repeated attempts to narrow the boundaries of the re-emerging civil society. The drawing we have chosen for the cover of this year's report - a precarious bridge held in place by a passing celestial body - is admittedly self-ironic. However, it is an accurate illustration of the "mission impossible" which CSD has undertaken. more » |

The Use of Bulgarian Foreign Debt Bonds in Privatization, June 1995
Bulgaria is the only country in Central and Eastern Europe to allow the use of foreign debt bonds in privatisation. It is a challenge to introduce a debt-for-equity swap mechanism in a country which is in transition from a centrally planned to a market economy, because of the unique nature of this transition. Of course, it is being carried out based on the considerable experience and analyses of the effect of the debt-for-equity swaps in some countries in Latin America and Africa. Legal Aspects of the Private Sector in Bulgaria, March 1995
Following the socialist revolution in 1944, the legal system and legislation served the purpose of fortifying the economic framework of socialist society. A number of laws adopted in the first years of socialism put public property and socialist planned economy in the foreground. Private property was rejected and certain laws were passed stipulating the expropriation of private means of production, the collectivization of farm land, and finally, the nationalization of personal property of citizens - housing, and others. more » |
