Southeast Europe Online is a portal site targeting civil society organizations in
Southeast Europe. It was built by ARC Fund with seed funding
provided by USAID in the period September 2000 - September
2002. Since then the portal site has become a recognized source
of information on civil societies in the region which receives
around 3,000 unique visits per month.
The main goal of building and maintaining this portal has
been to encourage co-operation and concentration of efforts
and resources of non-governmental organizations (NGO) for
a sustained democratization and development of the region.
Civil society has a crucial role in building a peaceful and
prosperous future for countries in Southeast Europe. The site
provides a shared platform for supporting experience and information
exchanges, facilitating partnerships among organizations in
the region and integration with counterparts in Western Europe
and the U.S., and assisting linkages with international donor
agencies.
The portal covers the following countries in SEE: Albania,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania
and Yugoslavia.
It is aimed at:
Fostering cooperation among organizations in SEE and promoting
understanding of common opportunities, expertise and resources;
Using the Internet technology to internationalize the
efforts of NGOs and, in this way, strengthen their capacity
to influence regional democratization processes;
Enabling NGOs to contribute more effectively to the reconstruction
of SEE by providing a cost-effective facility to match the
international donor interests and resources with those of
regional NGOs.
The site includes the following features:
an interactive database with more than 1,900 NGOs in the
seven countries with details about their activities;
database of major donor organizations for the region;
an interactive calendar of events around the region;
NGOs learning toolkit;
daily updated news archive;
database with around 1,700 useful web sites and pages;
country profiles and reference information.
