On 21 December 2008, the Center for the Study of Democracy held a High Table discussion with the participation of Mr. Robert McFarlane. International Conference: Anticorruption Policies and Practices in Southeast Europe
On 9 December 2008 at Boyana Conference Center an international conference took place, entitled Anti-corruption Policies and Practices in South Eastern Europe. The conference was dedicated to the International Anti-Corruption Day, which has been commemorated on 9 December each year since 2003 by resolution of the UN General Assembly. more »
 
Round table: The informal economy in Bulgaria: Policy responses in an economic crisis
On 3 December 2008 the Center for the Study of Democracy and Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Office Bulgaria organized a round table on the policy responses to the informal economy. During the event experts from the Center for the Study of Democracy presented the Hidden Economy Index 2008 and policy-makers discussed the policy responses to the informal economy during an economic crisis. more »
 
Workshop: Innovation, Intellectual Property Rights and Their Multilateral and Regional Regulation. The Case of the SEE Transition Economies
On 17-19 October 2008 the Center for the Study of Democracy, in collaboration with the University of Oslo organized a workshop on the issues of innovation and intellectual property rights. Open discussion: The National Assembly – a Guarantee for a Responsible State
On 15 October 2008 the Center for the Study of Democracy together with the Bulgarian National Assembly organized an open discussion entitled The National Assembly – a Guarantee for a Responsible State. Members of Parliament, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, Constitutional Court justices and members of the Supreme Judicial Council, academics, representative of non-governmental organizations and journalists attended the meeting. more »
 
Seminar on Public-Private Partnerships in the Area of Safer Internet Use
On 16 July 2008 the Center for the Study of Democracy, together with the Consultative Council with the Committee on EU Matters of the Bulgarian National Assembly, held a seminar, entitled Public-Private Partnerships in the Area of Justice, Freedom and Security: the New EU Programme on Safer Use of the Internet with an audience of Members of Parliament, representatives of governmental institutions, NGO’s and experts. more »
 
EU proposes protection from discrimination beyond the workplace
The Commission has today adopted a proposal for a directive which provides for protection from discrimination on grounds of age, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief beyond the workplace. This new directive would ensure equal treatment in the areas of social protection, including social security and health care, education and access to and supply of goods and services which are commercially available to the public, including housing. Eurobarometer surveys show that a large majority of Europeans support such legislation: 77% back measures to protect people from discrimination in education and 68% in access to goods and services. more »
 
Wider powers and greater measures needed to tackle homophobia
Equal protection by EU anti-discrimination law remains an ideal not a fact for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals (LGBT) living in many parts of the European Union (EU). Greater legislative protection and wider support within the EU is required. more »
 
FRA signs pledge to support UEFA anti-racism campaign during EURO 2008™
The European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) will join UEFA, FARE, FIFPro, football players and others in signing a “pledge” supporting respect for diversity at a launch event for EURO 2008™ on 7 June in Basel, Switzerland. This “pledge” is timely as a spate of events in Europe over the past year has shown that the spectrum of racism and other forms of intolerance still haunt the sport. more »
