Second Annual International Conference: NATO, EU and the New Risks: A Southeast Europe Perspective
The Second Annual International Conference, organized by the Center for the Study of Democracy as part of the series of events addressing the new security threats, was held on October 29-30, 2004 in Sofia. The forum benefited from the participation of NATO Deputy Secretary General and EU representatives, as well as government ministers, professional military and security leaders from Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria. more »
 
Public discussion: Transportation, Smuggling, and Organized Crime
On October 14, 2004 the Center for the Study of Democracy presented its new analytical report Transportation, Smuggling, and Organized Crime at a round table discussion in Sofia Hotel Balkan. The report analyses the participation of transportation companies in smuggling practices. more »
 
Meeting to Discuss the Recommendations in the Transportation, Smuggling and Organized Crime Report
On October 12, 2004 the CSD hosted a meeting to discuss the conclusions and recommendations of the Transportation, Smuggling and Organized Crime report. The meeting was attended by Mr. Jeremy Hill, Ambassador, British Embassy, Mr. Boyko Kotzev and Mr. Roumen Stoilov, Deputy Ministers of Interior, Mr. Assen Assenov, Customs Agency Director, members of the Expert group which has developed the report and CSD experts. more »
 
Round table: Reporting on Organized Crime
The Philadelphia Inquirer reporter George Anastasia took part in a discussion about the role of the media in the fight against organized crime on September 29, 2004 at the CSD. Mr. Anastasia has been writing about organized and disorganized crime for the past twenty years, covering the action from Atlantic City and South Philadelphia. more »
 
6th Colloquium on Cross-Border Crime: “Crime and Economy and Crime Economy”
On September 2-4, 2004 the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and the University of Tilburg organized in Berlin a colloquium on the issues of cross-border crime. It aimed to reveal the links between legal and illegal entrepreneurs, the vulnerability of the legal economy and the ways to counteract organized business crime. more »
 
Countering the New Security Challenges: the Experience of Norway and Bulgaria
On June 23, 2004 the Center for the Study of Democracy held a seminar on the new challenges to the national and international security. Norwegian and Bulgarian experts shared experience on the mechanisms to prevent and counter organized crime and international terrorism and discussed the possible role of the police in the international security policy. more »
 
Anti-Corruption Training of Trainers for the National Defense University
The Center for the Study of Democracy organized an anti-corruption training for lecturers from the National Defense University Vassil Levski and the High Military-Naval School N. Y. Vaptsarov on December 11-12, 2003 . The purpose of the seminar was to enhance the capacity of these institutions to conduct anti-corruption training courses. more »
 
Public discussion: Drug Markets and Organized Crime in Bulgaria
On December 11, 2003 a CSD analysis on the structure and organization of drug distribution in Bulgaria was presented at a public discussion. The analysis looks into the genesis and structure of drug distribution in Bulgaria, markets cartelization, hierarchy in the drug networks and the role of the organized crime for developing these markets. more »
 
Euro-Atlantic Integration in Southeast Europe: the Role of NATO and the Partnership for Peace in Promoting Reform in the Defense and Security Sector
On November 24-25, 2003 the CSD in cooperation with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Bulgaria held a workshop aimed to contribute to the reforms of the defense and security sector of Serbia and Montenegro and its preparation for the Partnership for Peace process. more »
 
Anti-Corruption Training Seminar for the Defense and Staff College
A two-day anti-corruption training took place on 6-7 November 2003 at the "G. S. Rakovski" Defense and Staff College in Sofia with the participation of 8 officers from the General Staff Course, 14 officers from the Strategic Course and 4 officers and staff members of the management. more »
